Site Portable Accommodation

Site portable accommodation generally refers to any type of portable buildings whether they are offices, toilets to steel storage units. There are many different reasons why portable buildings are used, and one of the mains reasons for their use is there versatility. They are very quick and easy to install and can be used at almost any location depending on the road network. Portable cabins are generally used for temporary accommodation, however due to their robust and efficient design they are sometimes used for very long periods of time spanning many years and become part of the locality where they are erected. They are very commonly used on building sites where they can be seen typically stacked one on top of another to form an efficient space saving office block, where space is at a premium. These types of buildings are more commonly called modular or jackleg cabins and are available in wide range of styles and finishes to suit the customers requirements. Some types of site accommodation can be very impressive and buildings such as offices and classrooms can involve much larger installations with a huge floor space and facilities such as canteens and toilets incorporated into them. Site portable accommodation can include the following installations; · Offices · Toilets · Marketing suites · Storage units · Showers and changing rooms · Nurseries and classrooms · Surgeries and clinics · Welfare units The office environment in portable buildings has undergone a huge change in the past few years, with spacious open plan office areas, and open plan offices are often designed alongside other facilities as part of the same refurbished building complex. Marketing suites can look particularly impressive, and are perfect for developers and house builders who like to impress their clients. Welfare facilities are very important to many companies and their clients, and providing good high quality canteens with temporary buildings and portable cabins can prove to be essential to many companies.

Where Can I Find Direction When Traveling?

Nothing beats that intuitive sense that says, "I know exactly where I'm going." Unfortunately, we are simply not programmable, as robots are. We cannot just download directions into our brains to be stored forever, so we rely on maps. Over the years, mapping has become so much more than just street maps and road atlas functions. Today we use online maps to advise us on local businesses, news, weather, traffic and more.
Traveling
Google Maps has become the template of choice for a number of local food maps. At Menurequest, you can plot restaurants on a map of your city, as well as read/write reviews, make reservations and get driving directions. In Philadelphia, Communitywalk is an amazing resource for local event organizers who want to ask a number of nearby restaurants to participate.
At Toeat, you will find a number of dining options in your neighborhood. In major cities like NY, Paris, Bangkok and Chicago, you will find baked goods at Yummybaguette. Or you may need to get your burrito fix at Burritophile. Drinkers can appreciate Wineandtimes, which helps plan a winery tour, as well as Drinktown, which lets you know all the local booze specials.
Google Maps is not the only "mashup maker" on the block, of course. A number of non-Google applications have popped up to serve a wide variety of functions. For instance, if you live on a fault line, then visit Lerdorf, as you may appreciate the "Real-Time Earthquake Map." If you are looking for nearby bloggers, movie showtimes, gas prices or driving directions, then you can see "Atlas" (based on MSN's Virtual Earth platform) at Atlas Freshlogicstudios.
Traveling
One of the most popular mapping sites is Flickr, where amateur photographers can share their pictures and create maps of their favorite places, people and things. Readers have given rave reviews for Gutenkarte, where lit lovers can read full books (such as Jules Verne's "Around the World in 80 Days") chapter by chapter, while viewing a map of the locations discussed in the book. If you prefer news to fiction, don't miss the world and local news at Mappedup or Poly9 Viavirtualearth (where MSNBC news is plotted out on a map!)
You can find directions on your computer, on your GPS device or even on your cell phone. The trend is that programmers are finding ways of bringing online maps to you, no matter where you are. For instance, if you find yourself lost somewhere with little time to recoup, never fear: Loki can track your location via satellite and send you a map to your next location on your mobile phone. A number of phones, from the iPhone to the Android G1, are making MapQuest, Google Maps and Yahoo Maps technology available to you when you are on-the-go.

Finding the Best Atlas of the World

Every home needs a good world atlas. While MapQuest, Yahoo Maps and Google Maps may have edged out traditional street maps for our directional needs, there will always be a place for a nice hard-cover, full-colored atlas. You can read at-a-glance profiles of different countries or cities, gain travel tips, reference information, teach the kids about other places and cultures or simply explore the world right from your sofa. But which one of the world reigns supreme? This question is a difficult one to answer, but here are some classic selections, as well as some new options to unearth.
One of the most frequently used atlases is Goode's World Atlas, edited by Edward B. Espenshade, Jr. This pocket-sized book contains a number of high-quality maps from a cache of professional geographers. Another great selection is the National Geographic Road Atlas of the United States, Canada and Mexico, which features, hands-down, the best street maps of North America. The 10th Edition Times map of the World boasts 125 color maps and a quarter of a million place names.
The DK World Atlas is full of entertaining facts, while also providing geographic information about every country in the world. You will also want to add the DK Atlas of World History, which includes maps, timelines, photographs and historical notes, and the DK World Reference Atlas, which has 1 to 6 pages about each country, discussing politics, climate, world affairs, economics, crime, health, media, education and communications.
Sometimes you can find a map the world that reveals the current state of our planet. The State of the World Atlas does just that, displaying the most current statistics, profiles and realities about world politics, economics, food supplies, military power, energy resources, pollution levels and biodiversity. In a nutshell, what a hardcopy atlas of the world delivers, which online mapping lacks, is that historical, worldview of mapmakers and cartographers who take the great time and effort to color code our world and combine data with maps in a sensible way, thus painting the larger picture.
If you are looking for an atlas of American history to inspire the kids, then consider Elspeth Leacock and Susan Buckley's "Places in Time: A New Atlas of American History" (for 7-14 year olds), which teaches kids about fascinating stories behind 20 little-known American places using oral narratives, old maps, drawings and contemporary accounts. Don't forget to get Lynn Kuntz's "Celebrate the USA: Hands-On History Activities for Kids" (for 8-10 year olds), which will have you playing musical inventions like Ben Franklin or creating liberty wind socks from oatmeal boxes, glues, yarn and paper.

Creation of a Survival Vehicle

For a lot of us, our vehicle is a home away from home. Why not make this alternate home as comfortable and functional as possible? This can be easily accomplished with the unnatural selection of some items to outfit your vehicle for survival.
How did the survival vehicle originate? It was the discovery that I had enough French fries, bits of bun, candy pieces, nuts, cheerios, etc. on the floor to survive being stranded in my van for some time, and then things just evolved. I suggest these adaptations for your needs and comfort while spending time in your mobile home.
Purchase a sturdy organizer/storage caddy for the area between the two front seats. (Some cars come with them - lucky.) Be sure it has duel cup holders, one for your water bottle and one for tissues. Kleenex now makes a handy car dispenser in the shape of a cup.
Inside the organizer, divide it into two areas: food and medical. Stock the food section with nuts, hard candy, gum, protein bars and baggies of cereal - can't forget something the kids! I prescribe filling the other section with something for a headache - no need to explain that one - antacids for meals on the run, and car sickness medicine for long trips. Your kids may not get car sick but this brings on a nap like a charm. Throw in some hand sanitizer for when the kids touch each other and then scream. Rub some on and the cooties are gone.
Keep your spare change of underwear on the top of all these items to keep others from entering this restricted area. If your little passengers ask if your "watchdrawers" are clean, be vague for an extra deterrent factor. (Remember when moms worried about you having clean underwear in case you had an accident? Accident - it's such a vague term.)
Next stop is the glove compartment. When have you ever seen a pair of gloves in there? Neatly tuck away the obligatory insurance card, registration, and owner's manual to make room for your trial-sized deodorant, plastic bag(s), emergency feminine item, preserved MapQuested routes of infrequent trips into unfamiliar territory, otherwise known as "away games," real maps and duct tape.
Duct tape is a universal item and should be a part of any survival kit. Its merits include strength, durability and the ability to break off without a scissors. I have used it for car repairs, fixing school projects damaged in transport, fastening items to the top of my car and for momentarily soothing an agitated child. No, I didn't tape her mouth. She chewed on it and I was amazed with its ability to withstand saliva and sharp little teeth. It was kind of hard getting the adhesive off her cheeks though.
Hang a plastic shopping bag for garbage on the arm rest. Change it when it bulges and burps out items when going over bumps.
Your visor organizer holds your sunglasses and CDs of your favorites for waiting between runs, and some Disney classics to soothe the masses. (Warning - this might bring on a case of choral singing.)
I finish with a Yankee candle air freshener hanging from my rear view mirror. The ride home from football practice is just a bit sweeter. I tell the kids it's how I pimp my ride.
If you are lucky, there will be room in the back for jumper cables, a blanket, a few extra water bottles, a flashlight and your spare tire. If you have them ready, chances are you'll never need th
You now have a survival vehicle. Nothing can stop you. Unless it has a flashing red light on top. Then you're on your own.
If you care about style, you will have to make some modifications to these retrofits as I only have enough time to come up with their basic form. I am confident some clever parent can make them classy. They would have no school-aged children because after that you are simply driving yourself crazy.
Now, where did I put that MapQuest to the nut house?
Mary Fagan has an M.S. in Education and is the mother of three children with the gray hairs to prove it. When not adapting her survival vehicle, she offers lighthearted parenting humor at http://motherwise.us

The "Mapquest" to Heaven

Mapquest
Every time I have to travel to a place where I've never been or I've not been there lately my favorite place find directions is mapquest. Everything looks so easy, you just key in your location and your destination and with one click you get the precious directions. You get the shortest way, the fastest way, the mileage and the time of traveling.
Sounds great no? Yes, it makes all so easy... But traveling isn't that easy and when you start to travel you find out that there are certain unpredicted things like a traffic jam, an accident and sometimes...the wrong directions. Most of the times mapquest is giving you good directions, but sometimes you get some wrong directions too.
Mapquest
I remember traveling to Georgia and right at the end of the travel I got lost. I was lucky to have my cell phone with me and I've called my friend who gave me the right directions. The reason this is happening is because new roads are made every year and sometimes mapquest is not yet updated.
For example I live for more than 2 years in the same place and mapquest still can't find my address. It's true that is taking me very close, but not to the right place.
Everybody need directions in life and not only directions, but the best directions. You want to take the best decisions for you, and never miss your opportunities and reach your full potential. But let me ask you a question: Have you always taken the right decisions? Have you always got the perfect directions?
Few years ago USA designed a peace plan for Middle East, it was called "The road map". They were determined to follow it and to bring peace in that troubled area. I don't know if that plan worked or not, but I know is not peace in that area now.
Mapquest
The truth is that we are not getting always the best directions and we have them we fail to follow them. The Bible says that "There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death." (Prov 14:12) or other version says "That many ways seem right to a man" . Yes it is true so many ideas we have, advice we receive from others, teachings we listen, education we receive, all of them seem to be the answer to our problem. It's only when we start the travel following them we find out that they aren't perfect and our soul is still empty and restless.
We have such a great responsibility on our shoulders, our decisions will not only influence our present and future on this earth, but will influence our eternity. We have a mortal body, but an immortal soul and Jesus says that our soul is more valuable than the whole world "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?" (Mt.16:26).
Mapquest
Where do you look for answers? Where do you look for directions? Where do you look for advice?
I personally know where is the best mapquest to find directions to Heaven. Jesus Himself is the one who came from there and went to prepare us a mansion in Heaven. He is the ONLY WAY to Heaven. That's why I look for direction in His Word, the Holy Bible which has never failed to give me the best answers, the best solutions and the best directions in my life travel.
Why don't you try it? You'll find peace and joy on the travel and also an amazing welcome at the end of your travel. As long as you follow Bible's directions you'll never get lost and you're never alone. Jesus Himself said: "and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen." (Mt. 28:20b)

Google Maps and MapQuest Driving Directions Compared

I realize I am probably dating myself just a little... but web based map services like Google Maps or MapQuest just astonish me. Whoever figured out how to map any block on the planet in 5 seconds has got to be rich... if not they should be.
If you never tried this wonderful service, go to maps.google.com right now. It doesn't matter where you are going... the shortest most up to date driving instructions and maps are seconds away.
G-Maps has been my choice for a few years already. The know-how in the geo-mapping arena has advanced remarkably yielding amazing immediate maps of most of the planet and directions to just about any place in the world.
I'm going to do a brief review of these three, which hopefully will save you some exploration time when you enter the websites.
I switched to Google Maps after using MapQuest for nearly 8 years (more about MapQuest below). What switched my allegiance after all those years, was examining the instructions at Google Maps. You know, when all else fails read the instruction?
It is a marvelous piece of technology which will present you with both maps nearly anywhere in the world and detailed driving instructions in many countries.
To try and cover all of Google Maps in this review would fail, so let's look at the central features of the site and you can uncover the rest when you arrive there.
You can see earth satellite images all over the planet and superimpose streets on those satellite images, it's very cool. All the key map categories are available to view.
You can see people wandering around Sagrada Familia in Barcelona or read the home plate logo at Coors field in Denver. In many parts of the world, you can also generate point to point driving directions.
Another exclusive feature of Google Maps is that it lets you to alter the route it has laid out for you, simply by dragging the route marking to another point. We often know alternate routes, learned by experience that we want to stick to. The other services will not let you change the path... with Google Maps it's easy.
Rand McNally has been making road atlases for a very long time. Word has it that Fred Flintstone used their atlas. They still favor the printed map or atlas and publish a lot of them. Next time you stop at a gas station check by the register, I bet you'll find Rand McNally atlases for sale. Now, having said that, they have excellent e-maps and directions. I find them especially effective for comparing routes with Google or MapQuest as a double check kind of thing.
MapQuest has been around since the good old days of the internet... 1996... so by e-standards, it's very old if not ancient. AOL bought it in 2000 and remains in charge.
I have used Map Quest thousands of times and they always deliver. They have great maps for the US, Canada and Europe but are weaker in the rest of the planet in their quality and detail. US directions are totally detailed and usually very accurate. In some growth areas they can be a little behind, simply because of trying to stay current with new growth can be challenging.
The last chief feature on MapQuest, is that it will search for the least expensive gas or diesel no matter where you are in the US. It's a good way to keep an eye on your fuel budget and it only takes about 30 seconds.
Between the three of these websites, you should be able to find your way around anywhere on the planet.

Juried Art Shows; Nothing Personal Girl

"Why even enter juried art shows?" a lot of fellow artists have said. I have often agreed, especially while walking away with one of my paintings or sculptures in hand, after being rejected from a show I wrote out a $50.-100. check for. It is humiliating and expensive!
"Why didn't they like me?" I pout close to tears as I lean towards my car.
It is difficult to 'not' take it all personally. What is a girl to do? Every artist I have met, successful or not, has taken the rejection of their work personally at one time or another. It is hard not to. I am an artist though, not a girl trying to be noted in society like Paris Hilton or Britney Spears. Although I must admit that I have contemplated what a good diet would do for me and possible a face lift! I am an artist who is trying to get my work out there in the .com world of galleries that go on forever, to improve my search engine and get noticed by Google and Yahoo. I don't find myself saying to the .com world or to Google or Yahoo, "Why don't you like me?" Of course not! I get on my computer and research about how to get my work noticed and how to compete. I ask myself the hard questions. "Is my work appealing to the buyers out there in cyberspace? Is it marketable, while still being true to myself and my own personal idea of creativity? Have I learned all there is to know?" Never! Who would ever say or think that'?
I don't look at myself that objectively when I enter juried art shows though... or at least I didn't use to. I used to think that it was all connected, my like-ability and my talent. The juror would not only accept me in the show but would honor me with an award because they would view my art and see my heart and glistening smile. They would understand beyond the laziness and excuse the limitations of my painting or sculpture before it was polished off enough to truly call it finished. They would magically understand my true hope for the end result and accept it 'as is'. They would ignore all other competition and choose me because I felt so strongly about what I was trying to say to project the passion inside my heart. Or maybe deep down I felt I should be accepted because I had worked so hard on the last show by setting up the table with flowers and linen table clothes for horderves and wine. Surely I had been noticed!
I am trying to learn to stand back and really look at my work objectively. What else is an easel for huh? I am taking the same approach to juried shows as I have been with the .com world and Google and yahoo, with a realistic consideration and an acceptance that there will 'always' be people who are more fit than me... look at Paris Hilton and Britney Spears! Yet, because of my acceptance of the uphill struggle I see myself in the art world with an upward posture and a confidence that if I understand the journey and have my mapquest available to me. I am set. It doesn't take a tsunami to knock me over to accept my fate of being just like everyone else. I now enter juried art shows knowing I have done everything that 'I can' to present the best possible work that 'I' am personally capable of before it leaves my studio. Look out eminem there is a new rapper in town!

Even Courts Rely on Mapquest

On January 25, 2007 the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit granted a habeas corpus petition relying, in part, upon calculations performed by popular driving direction website Mapquest to determine that the petitioner's trial counsel had not properly explored petitioner's alibi before or during his trial on charges of murder and attempted murder. Raygoza v. Hulick, ___ F.3d ___, 2007 WL 184635 (7th Cir. 2007). The Court used Mapquest to determine the distance and travel time between the crime scene and a party petitioner had attended near the time of the crime.
It's not the first time that Mapquest has been cited as authority in a case. A number of state and federal courts have relied upon Mapquest to determine the distance or travel time between two points. Mapquest has been cited in dozens of reported decisions, including rulings on:
  • motions to change venue in civil cases, where the convenience of the forum to parties and potential witnesses was an issue. Smith v. State Farm Mut. Auto. Ins. Co., 169 Md. App. 286, 292, 900 A.2d 301, 305 (2006); Hoskin v. Un. Pacific Railroad Co., 365 Ill. App.3d 1021, 1025, 851 N.E.2d 646, 650 (2006)
  • motions to transfer a federal criminal case to another district. United States v. Anderson, 2000 WL 34237505, *7 (W.D. Wis. 2000); United States v. Ferguson, 432 F.Supp.2d 559, 563 n. 5 (E.D. Va. 2006)
  • a motion to dismiss, in which the court took judicial notice of the driving distance calculated by Mapquest. Untracht v. Fikri, 454 F.Supp.2d 289, 302 (W.D. Pa. 2006) (citing Gordon v. Lewistown, 272 F.Supp.2d 393, 429 n. 34 (M.D. Pa. 2003))
However, at least one court has held that courts should not take judicial notice of Mapquest results because the website is not sufficiently accurate. Commonwealth v. Brown, 839 A.2d 433, 436-37 (Pa. Super. 2003) ("An internet site determining distances does not have the same inherent accuracy as do professionally accepted medical dictionaries, or encyclopedias, or other matters of common knowledge within the community. The, we hold that the trial court abused its discretion in taking judicial notice of a MapQuest distance determination . . . .")
Though trial counsel may not be able to count on Mapquest to produce admissible evidence where a timely objection is raised, unchallenged Mapquest results are routinely considered by courts in determining distance or travel time between two points.

No MapQuest Needed to Find Addiction Treatment Centers

Addiction treatment centers are sprouting up like weeds, except they are much more helpful.
Not all centers are alike though. Different treatment programs offer different services and courses. Some deal strictly with the physical symptoms of addiction and focus on a safe withdr`wal while others focus on the 12 Step Program.
Substance abuse, rehabilitation centers are advertised on television, on the radio, in newspapers, and on the Internet. There are so many to choose from that even a person who is not suffering from an addiction would have a difficult time choosing the right place to seek help. It is hard enough for an addict to make the decision to quit using harmful substances. Can you imagine the pressure of having to choose one facility out of thousands of addiction treatment centers? It could be overwhelming.
How to Find the Best of the Addiction Treatment Centers
As you or your loved one looks for a recovery center, there are a few things which must be taken into account. Always remember that beating an alcohol or drug addiction is not easy and that it takes time and determination. Short term recovery programs do not offer the greatest chance for success.
You do not become an addict overnight, and you will not recover overnight. In order to heal, you need the constant, long-lasting support of an addiction treatment program. The best, addiction course is one that nurtures the whole person and takes into account both the physical and emotional facets of the addiction while maintaining the goal of long-term sobriety.
In order for a treatment facility to be effective, it must be capable of providing an environment in which an addict can eliminate abusive substances from his or her body. This process is called detoxification and can be most difficult to experience and observe. Once the person can handle the physical cravings related to drugs and alcohol, then the emotional healing (through counseling) begins.
Even though many addicts think they can cure themselves, it is not possible. That is why there are so many addicts today because every addict believes he can help himself or does not need help at all. Addiction treatment centers are not flights of whimsy; they exist because of the huge need for them.
These treatment programs know the ins and outs of addiction recovery, and they have the medical resources, both physical and emotional, to help people maintain healthy lifestyles, free of abusive substances.

Universal Laws and How to Use Them

Universal Laws are the laws that govern life and when we learn to work with them and not against them life just happens to work out better.
There are many fabulous writers on this topic. These writers inspire and educate others to make positive changes in their lives. The changes are often very profound and can change lives for better or worse depending on how you learn to make these laws work for you. Esther and Jerry Hicks, Sonia Choquette, Jack Canfield and Rhonda Byrne are excellent teachers on this subject.
Universal Laws are not a new concept. These laws have been around since the beginning of time. There is reference to it in the bible ( however Universal Law is non-denominational) and many great men such as Wallace Wattles and Andrew Carnegie and Napoleon Hill wrote about it years before it became popular in this century.
So what actually is Universal Law? Universal law in simple terms preaches that what you focus and dwell on, what you think about and talk about you create and bring into your reality. When used effectively it helps you to live a life with passion and purpose.
This is why I stated before that it can be used for positive or negative change. The choice is up to you.
The results you receive depend solely on your actions and your thoughts. This is why it is a must to follow a plan that will manifest in your life the results that you are seeking. You are the creator so you need to draw up the blueprints for creation.
Expect what you desire and never ever expect that which you do not desire. To gain the full force of Universal Laws in your life you need to desire and then expect. Focus on your desires and expect without doubt that it is yours. Focus only on the positive and you will begin to see elements of that which you desire popping up in your life.
When working with Universal Laws including the Law of Attraction it is imperative that you put yourself in the mindset of giving. For it is when you give that you open the gates to receiving. If you are inclined to hold back on the giving you are sending out signals of scarcity which will come back to you. The more you give the more you receive. The law states that if you do not give you cannot receive.
Put yourself in the best possible position by opening up and giving with an open heart. Desire and expect and watch your life be transformed.
Universal Law works for everyone there are no exclusions. To put yourself in the mindset [http://www.totalserenity.info] for creating miracles Click here [http://www.learntomanifest.info]

Franchisee Compliance With Law and Government Licensing Issues

A franchising company must always be a Stickler for details when it comes to government licensing and compliance with Law of their franchises and franchised outlets. If a franchisee fails to comply with Law or secure the proper government licenses to operate their business it could become a public relations nightmare.
Not only must franchising companies monitor their franchises, they should also address this issue prior to the commencement of the franchise in the franchising company's franchise disclosure documents and franchise agreements. It is for this reason that I added a clause into all of my franchising companies franchise agreements. Below you'll find a clause;
3.24 Compliance with Law
3.24.1 Government Licensing
Franchisee will comply with all national, federal, state, regional and local laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of the Franchised Business and will timely obtain and maintain any and all permits, certificates, registrations, insurance or licenses necessary for the full and proper conduct of the Franchised Business. Franchisee will pay promptly, as they become due, all national, state, city and county licensing, registration and permit fees and charges in connection with the operation of the Franchised Business.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- --
Now then, you must consult your own franchise attorney to determine how best to address this issue for your company and to make sure that you are protected as a franchisor to insure the integrity of your brand-name. I hope you will consider this in 2006.

Credit Debt Relief - Understanding New Laws and Regulations on Credit Card Companies in 2010

Credit card debt relief has been one of the main areas of focus for the federal government in the past couple of years. Out of the many laws and regulations on credit card companies introduced by the government the 'Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009 is of considerable importance. This act has taken effect from end week of February 2010.
The malpractices adopted by the credit card companies to increase their returns are not unknown to the people in general. These practices tend to increase the total outstanding amount of the debtor. The new law attempts to provide debt relief to the consumers by restricting retroactive rate increases and issuing a ban on double cycle billing.
The Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act is supposed to amend the Truth in Lending Act and also attempts to do away with the unfair and deceptive practices of the credit card companies. This brings down the debt burden of the consumers and prevents them from further defaulting.
There are many who are very happy with the new laws and regulations on the credit card companies. But there are many who believe that it will do more harm than good. Because of the restriction of retroactive rate increases the credit card companies will have to give up on a chunk of their profits. Being used to making as much as they do, the company will in turn find other avenues for rate increases to make up their losses. This involves a major bending of the law.
Under the new law the issuers are supposed to give a 45 days notice for rate increases to the consumers and in the first 12 months of issuing the card there should be no increases made. This may come as good news to new card holders but the ones who have been paying their dues regularly for years will find their charges going up (e.g. annual fee increase).
Other increases that the company charges to make up their loss are by increasing various fees (e.g. late payment fees). For example, for simple defaulting where the consumer used to pay (say) $35 will have to shell out $50.
There are other ways by which, the losses incurred because of the new laws and regulations on credit card companies are made up at the cost of the consumer. The annual fees and the transaction fees of the consumers can be increased very easily by providing a 45 days prior notice. Drastic changes have been made by the companies in the calculation of minimum amount payable by the consumers. In certain companies it has been increased by more than 50%.
For example if a consumer has $10000 as balance, he had been paying a minimum amount due of 2% i.e. $200. The companies are now in a position to increase this 2% to 5% which will result in the consumer paying $500. Therefore, the consumer ends up paying $300 more every month that he could otherwise have saved. This sudden increase may cause the consumer to default.
So, it can be seen that while the new law attempts to provide debt relief to a section of consumers, it increases the debt burden on the others. This too can be controlled if the credit card companies for the time being settle for lesser profit for greater good.
Debt settlement is a legitimate alternative to filing bankruptcy. Consumers must be experiencing a legitimate financial hardship and have at least $10k in unsecured debt to qualify for most programs. Top 5 Reasons To Have a Map and Directions on Your Website

After creating an application to allow a map and driving directions be placed on almost anyone's website quickly and easily. I thought it would be a good idea to let me know why they need a map and directions on their website anyways. You can find out more information about our application by click the link to our demo page listed at the bottom of this article.
So now for the reasons.
  1. Customers can easily and quickly find out if your location(s) is near them. Making it easier and quicker for someone to get your location is an advantage as a result can be that they come to your place of business quicker. Think about it if your searching online for pet stores and you come across a store you want to go to and you can easily find the location you might move on and try to find another store because it was to hard to find out how to get to that one. You don't want a potential customer not being you customer just because they had a hard time find out how to get to you.
  2. Providing driving directions ensure your new customers and current customers will not have a problem getting to your location. You can rest assured that you customer will be able to get acurate directions if you provide a them on your website. I have even seen one doctors office use that as their sole means of letting people how to get to their office. When they have a new patient they just direct them to their website to get directions on how to get to the office.
  3. By having your location's map and directions embedded on your website you don't cut the flow as opposed to having a link to MapQuest or Google Maps so that a web visitor can get directions. I have seen many times when someone is online doing something and they get distracted by some ad or something else on the web page. If you have the directions and map on your website you will not have to worry about the user getting distracted and going off on some other road.
  4. If the viewer wants to print the page they will be printing your web page out. In a way this means you their printing an advertisement out for your business. You never know who could see it next and as a result want business from you. You can even have some sort of advertisement on your page you have the map and directions with the intent that they will print this out.
  5. It makes your website look more up-to-date. By having these on your website you present the appearance of a higher class looking and designed website. Would you not think better of a website if it could provide you with everything you needed instead of directing you to some other website. You find of get the feeling they did not spend enough time on creating their website when things needed to be outsourced like that.
Well I hope that helps you understand why you should have a map and driving directions embedded on you website. To see a demo of our map and driving directions application please visit our demo web page at map.pittwebsite.com

Ten Social Media Law and Governance Tips for Social Business

Introducing the topic of "Social Media Governance," marketing strategist and attorney Glen Gilmore explained, "Governance is about how a company establishes and sustains social networking best practices by integrating social media into its corporate culture. It's the evolution of 'social media' into 'social business'." Ever the attorney, Gilmore added his own disclaimer: "Nothing in this post should be considered legal advice as that would require a consultation with an attorney from your own jurisdiction. These ten tips are should help companies create sustainable best practices in new media marketing."
1. Create a Governance Team.
2012 should be the year in which business gets serious about social media governance, integrating social business into corporate culture.
Your governance team should reflect a cross section of your organization and it should become a center of excellence for your business. Silos do not work.
A governance team should bring together diverse talent, including marketing, customer service, IT, legal, and human relations, to share in learning, establish best practices, and create benchmarks for excellence, while humanizing your brand and driving business results.
2. Establish/Update A Social Media Policy.
If your organization doesn't have a social networking policy, you are courting disaster as you are inviting even a single employee to have the power to redefine your brand in one inadvertent or ill-conceived post.
If, on the other hand, your organization was an early adopter of new media (or at least an early adopter of a social media policy!), it is likely time to update your policy. In the past year, the National Labor Relations Board has rendered over a hundred decisions touching on the topic of employee use of social media, with many of the Board's actions prompted by overly broad social networking policies that were deemed to having a "chilling effect" on employee protected speed.
The law is finally catching up to the implications of the huge amount of communication, marketing and conversation taking place on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, blogs, vlogs, etc. Your policy and guidelines should reflect those changes and clarifications.
An abundance of model policies exists online. Be mindful that some of the policies you may find online may also be in need of updating or just plain wrong. You need to invest in getting your policy right and the proper policy for your organization may vary immensely depending on they type of organization you are and the degree of existing regulatory guidelines you must follow.
3. Create a Playbook
Unlike your social media policy, which establishes the rules and limits of online social engagement, your playbook should be more of "how-to" book for your employees, a reference that provides examples of what should and should not be done on social networks. Social network profile templates providing suggestions on how to best project a professional and consistent brand image should be included.
4. Establish a Social Media Communications Crisis Management Plan.
Along the way, your business will invariably have a crisis that will require it to muster its social networking resources. Prepare for the crisis before it happens. This should include creating a response chart of who within your organization would be tasked with what and how they would be contacted, as most crises seem to happen after 5:00 p.m. or on a weekend. Have round-tables to identify the events most likely to trigger a communications crisis within your organization and then do some training exercises to run through how you charts and policies would work.
If you are a larger organizations, you likely already have crisis communications plans - they need to include social.
Knowing the mechanics of what to do if an employee has sent a mistweet from a corporate Twitter account (hint: don't ignore it!) or what to do if your social network account has been hijacked by a spammer, are some of the scenarios you should review.
Be sure to cover this topic in both your playbook.
5. Take the Time to Learn the FTC's Social Media Disclosure Guidelines.
In 2009, the Federal Trade Commission, which characterizes itself as "the nation's consumer protection agency", updated its endorsement guidelines to include social media, addressing the disclosure requirement for sponsored bloggers and those that sponsor them, along with a series of. Most marketers have never read them. Put them on your reading list! (When the FTC's social media guidelines first came out in 2009, I blogged about about them: they haven't changed. New FTC Rules: Business and Bloggers Beware)
Succinctly, contrary to a large body of writing on the subject, disclosure "tabs", "buttons", "links", and static profile disclosures do not suffice to satisfy the FTC's disclosure requirements. (Disclosures are required within the context of the social conversation.)
6. Provide Your Employees with Social Media Training.
Most of your employees are using social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, throughout the day, rdgardless of what your company policy may say to the contrary. Get over it. Instead, give your employees the training they deserve so that when they are using social media their time spent there will become an asset to your business rather than a ticking bomb.
7. Create a Decision Tree.
Just as call center employees are often provided with a decision tree to help them to quickly answer a myriad of questions, a social media decision tree should also be established to help employees understand the dynamics of responding on behalf of a brand in social networks. The U.S. Air Force even developed a new media decision tree that the pharmaceutical Pfizer later used as the basis for its own. Social media governance should aim to simplify social networking participation for employees, while still relying on the good sense of employees to personalize the social conversation. A decision tree will also add to brand consistency.
8. Streamline Access to Compliance and Legal.
Social media engagement is all about "real-time" conversation. It doesn't mean a brand needs to give an instant response to every post or tweet, but it does mean that your company should strive to answer questions quickly -- you can get added time by letting your community know that you have heard a question or complaint and that are looking into it, but whatever procedures need to be followed to provide a response must be time efficient. Having a way to get answers from compliance or legal requires a new approach that dedicates a greater appreciation for the time sensitivity of responding to social network inquiries or comments. Work on a way to accomplish this.
9. Share Regular Updates on Best Practices.
As social networking continues to evolve, so should your best practices and your sharing of information about those best practices. Being attentive to and sharing updated guidance from regulatory agencies should be part of your updates. (This is a task best assigned to your governance team with special input from legal.)
10. Monitor, Assess and Audit Your Social Networking Activities.
Even with the best policies and training, your company's social networking activities should be monitored and assessed for excellence. This doesn't mean that every tweet has to be a masterpiece, but that online social networking engagement is consistent with the brand and contributing to the building of trust, transparency and brand advocates.
It is worth noting that many of the FTC's social media-related settlements have included mandatory outside audits of social networking activities. Bringing an independent audit into the mix is good idea to help keep monitoring of social business activities as accurate as possible.
BONUS: Clearly Define Who Owns Company-Related Social Network Accounts.
One of the legal hot potatoes of 2011, the dastardly debate of who really owns your Twitter account or your LinkedIn contacts, etc., etc., is set to be formally answered in 2011.
Without taking away the suspense of any impending court decision, ownership of a social media account is subject of debate and litigation if it is not clearly defined and agreed upon between employers and employees or business partners. Dispel the ambiguity and legal uncertainty: make a written agreement that covers the issue.
A written agreement outlining what is to happen with a social media account opened or operated for a business purpose by an employee or business partner on behalf of a business is something that should be expressly defined. Why? Because most now recognize that social media accounts have a business value and, left undefined, issues of ownership are likely to arise when business partners or employees part ways.

Answering Your Questions About Maps

This is a very big world and it is very easy to get lost in it if you do not have precise directions on where you are going. Thousands of years ago people would look at the stars to guide them to their destination. They had no idea how long it would take if they had never been there before and they had no clue as to whether or not there would be certain landmarks along the way.
Cartographers changed the world for people everywhere by developing maps. The map is one of the most used tools humans use every single day of their lives. It may be the simple road map or it may be a complex map of the terrain and geography. This is a subject that everyone should know something about and in this article you can find out some of the basic information that you may need.
What are maps?
Maps are a representation of a certain space. The map is used to find geographical information about a certain area. While there are many different types of maps, the most heavily used map is the one marked with streets and highways. People will use this type of map to find out how to get to a certain destination. The map has changed considerably over the years. Whereas it was once mainly topographical and showed just large landmarks, the modern map is digital and spoken through a GPS unit.
When did maps become electronic?
For the way that most people think of electronic maps, it would be with the invention of mapping websites such as Google Maps or Mapquest. These websites allowed people to come in, type in their destination, and provided them with exact turn-by-turn directions in order to get to where they needed to go. At first the directions were entirely reliant upon paper maps that have been inputted into the systems but these changed as satellite images and details became more readily available. In fact you could actually say that it was satellite images and satellites that were the first electronic maps. They helped the military extraordinarily by showing them the layout of the land.
How often are maps updated?
Unfortunately there is not a set answer for this question. Obviously a paper map is updated far less than a digital map or one found on the internet. A paper map may be updated every nne or two years as new subdivisions are added and new streets are formed. This is especially true of a local city map. The map you find on the internet through Google, Mapquest or any other mapping site usually take less time but it can still be up to a year or more before the information is put in.
The problem is that all addresses have to be confirmed and verified. This takes time. GPS maps are updated usually the most frequently because there are more users inputting data that helps the GPS provider increase their coverage areas. If you are trying to find a location and cannot locate it on a map, you may want to find out the closest town and call the City Hall for directions. They can at least point you in the right way. You may even have to stop at a gas station for directions.
What is Google Earth?
Google Earth is a brand new feature provided by Google. It is an entirely new way of viewing a destination or a location. It gives you the versatility and freedom of actually seeing real time data on locations that you type in. You can explore the entire world with Google Earth. It is the ultimate in maps because you can see things as they happen and even visit places that would be impossible typically. To get Google Earth all you have to do is download the software from the Google website and you will be off exploring the world.

My New GPS

I am sure you have heard or probably have used the Global Positioning System known simply as GPS, right? Well in case you haven't it is a system of satellites and receivers with a precise-positioning and navigation tool to help you pinpoint where you are and where you need to go? The Department of Defense first designed the system to accurately determine the locations of soldiers, military vehicles, planes and ships world-wide. Today, it has extended into the commercial and scientific worlds. Commercially, GPS is used as a navigation and positioning tool in airplanes, boats, cars, and for almost all outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, fishing, and kayaking. Scientifically, GPS plays an important role in the earth sciences. Meteorologists use it for weather forecasting and global climate studies; and geologists can use it as a highly accurate method of surveying and in earthquake studies to measure tectonic motions during and in between earthquakes.
My question is how accurate is it? As for me, I became totally confused when I had to use it on a recent trip to Iowa. The car I rented came with a GPS unit and the clerk obviously assumed that I knew how to use it. It was a total nightmare for me. I was in a strange land-I had no idea how to get around town...at all! And of course being the organized person that I am MapQuest my entire trip, so there wouldn't be any problems to and from my destination...well guess what? I was wrong. My confusion started at the MLI Airport when I ask the clerk where the Country Inn Suite was located, and he said "type the address in your GPS and it will take you right to your location", so having some digital literacy I did, got lost and travelled 40 miles past my destination.
I made a couple stops to ask for directions, which only led to more confusion and dead ends, so what did I do? I pulled over to the side and did the only thing I knew to do...I cried! I forgot that my daughter was with me, until she advised me to pray and ask God for His help...why didn't I think of that? As we prayed for help I began feeling better and more confident that God would lead the way, and yes, He did! I followed my GPS (God's Presence & Sovereignty) and with guidance from His precision navigational named the Holy Spirit I located the Country Inn & Suites and checked in.
What I learned that night is when we travel to fast in life we lose our focus, and our sense of directions, causing stumbling blocks and obstacles to get in our way. I had MapQuest and a GPS unit and still got lost...why? I failed to ask questions about my directions for clarity to reach my destination while at the airport; instead I relied on my own recognizance that resulted in pure frustration. More importantly, I learned that no matter how prepared I was I still needed God's guidance not just in my travels but in my life. What about you? Have you been travelling in the fast lane? If so, be determined to get back on track with your GPS (God's Presence & Sovereignty) and take time to listen and ask questions to stay on the right road to your destination.

Comparing the Most Popular Map Websites

Finding maps online makes a lot of sense. You will have the latest information updated in real-time for a new street in your neighborhood or up-to-the-minute traffic reports to help you plan your commute. Step-by-step driving directions make any trip a breeze. Yet which online map site reigns supreme: Google, Yahoo or MapQuest?
First let's look at simple directions. That is why most of us find driving directions online after all, is it not? If you are worried about road hazards, construction zones and thick traffic, then Yahoo Maps is good for that function. MapQuest lets you check boxes to avoid highways and tolls, choose the shortest distance or take the route with the shortest time. The user-friendly, simple nature of this site is also a good perk for someone who wants their directions right away.
They also have recently added the drag-and-drop function that Yahoo has had, which helps you navigate around traffic obstructions. If you are walking or jogging, then Ask is the only site that lets you plot your pedestrian course. Google Maps can zoom in for close topographical views of any continent. To sum up, Yahoo is the best site when traffic or construction sites are a concern, while MapQuest provides quick point-A-to-point-B directions.
So what about maps of sightseeing? MapQuest does not offer satellite images currently, although if you have the addresses, you can plot out multiple points on your sightseeing tour to discover an efficient route. Google can show you extremely close-up views all around the world from Nairobi and Lima to Baghdad and Tokyo.
Yahoo also takes you right to the heart of the world's most far-flung continents using a number of sources for its images, although Google and Ask have more display pixels. Conclusively, Google Maps probably has the most comprehensive database of real-world images and the fastest response time for your sightseeing needs. In fact, there are entire websites dedicated to "sightseeing without leaving your living room via Google satellite maps."
Another site not detailed here, but worth looking at, is the newer Microsoft Windows Live Local. You can stick a pushpin on favorite locations, record notes and upload pictures to your sites to save or share with friends, which is sort of like the Google map creator function. You can also view traffic reports and get the clearest route, explore collections of sightseeing landmarks and tour 3-D cities.
This new player seems to perceptibly take the best of the other sites and do it better. As you browse, you will notice that all the sites have similar interfaces (except for that rebel, MapQuest) but the subtle differences are what make people so adamant about their favorite mapping engines.
Visit us for free tips and training to help you make quick easy money and have the financial freedom you deserve.

Is it Better to Use Google Or MapQuest For Driving Directions?

Getting directions from one place to another has become much easier in the last few years. Gone are the days of having to dig out an outdated paper map and attempt to find an approximate location somewhere between two city blocks. Now you can simply type in a starting address and end point on your favorite navigation assistance website and get detailed instructions free of charge to almost any location on the planet. When most people think of driving directions these days, either Google Maps or MapQuest.com comes to mind. Both websites offer a user friendly interface that can quickly help you find your way to your next destination.
Which service is better? Finding the answer to this question requires a quick comparison of MapQuest.com and Google Maps. While both services may seem very similar in function on the surface, they are actually quite different. In a side by side comparison, Google Maps seems to come out ahead when you dig below the root function and examine some of the more advanced features. It is true that both sites will provide you with turn by turn instructions, distance estimates, and an approximate travel time; the similarities end there for the most part. Google stands out on a number of levels with one of the more useful features being visual images of your destination and points along the way. Not only can you see landmarks and nearby businesses, you can actually zoom in on certain key locations all the way down to street level as if you were actually standing there!
This can be helpful to recognize when you are approaching turns or exits and provides a major advantage over a standard map like the ones you will find with MapQuest.com. Another feature most users will greatly appreciate is the ability to get real time traffic flow data so can get a realistic estimate of travel time based on actual conditions and not just the distance being travelled. This can save a lot of time if you know you need to search for an alternate route before you ever leave the house. One final feature that bears mentioning is the terrain map overlays that allow the user to get actual satellite images of the surrounding areas. This can be a great feature if you are planning an outdoor vacation that involves a trip to the lake or mountains as it gives you the ability to find points of interest long before you arrive at your destination.

What Do MapQuest and Mentors Have in Common?

I was always told that it is important to have a mentor in your life. But, why? What is the purpose of having a mentor?
I made mention in a previous article that we must learn the principle called -BE, DO, HAVE- in order to truly be successful in life. I said that one of the major downfalls of most individuals today is they DO NOT HAVE A TRIED AND PROVEN MAP.
We have all used MapQuest at some point in our lives whether on a family vacation, trip to Mexico, football game, soccer game, business meeting, speaking engagement, or even grandma's house. We typed in our home starting address and the destination ending address and clicked enter. There you have it, a detailed step-by-step plan/road map of how to get to your destination. It includes a map, estimated time of arrival, how many miles it takes to get there, fuel consumption cost, names of the roads, exit numbers, and distance to travel on each leg.
A mentor is quite similar in many ways. They have already been to the destination you are trying to reach. They know what pit stops to go to to refuel. They know what potholes and roadblocks to look out for while traveling. They know the best route to take to get you to your destination.
Many times the road they recommend is the road less traveled by the masses. At first it may cost you but in the end save you time, resources, and headaches.
One way to tell if you have a true mentor is to ask this question, "Do they have something I want or have they been where I desire to go?" If they do not meet those requirements then you have an adviser, not a mentor. I have a question for you. Would you classify some with a lot of book knowledge, MBA's, or PhD's as an expert or someone who has worked and gained experience in the field/industry for years? Students today spend years in school and eventually obtain their bachelors or graduate degree. Once they enter their particular work field, however, their education is weighted useless. Why? No experience. No road travel. No destination reached. Their journey didn't begin in kindergarten. It began the first day they started a job.
We all have destinations in life we desire to be. Find a great mentor who has been where you desire to be. Not having a mentor is challenging but having the wrong mentor is detrimental. Your selection process is the one of the most important decisions you will make. The wrong map could lead you to a destination you never intend to be. Choose wisely and carefully.
Happy Interviewing!

The Pros and Cons When Seeking Driving Directions With Online Sites

Before you drop $300 on that Garmin automobile navigation system, you may be wondering if you should stick with free online driving directions. After all, Yahoo and Google map developers are ambitiously working with cell phone application developers and carriers to offer mapping capabilities right on your mobile phone. In a few years' time, a car GPS device could become obsolete. Here are some practical pros and cons of the various map data sites.
There are a number of advantages to searching online for driving directions. For instance, you can read about traffic accidents, congestion or construction; all updated in real-time. You can check for alternate routes to take the shortest distance, shortest time, avoid highways or avoid tolls. Along the way, you can find gas stations, restrooms, eateries, post offices and other useful businesses.
You can gather step-by-step directions from one location to the next, including stops at up to 10 different locations, which will tell you the mileage and estimated travel time to make sure you do not miss turns or arrive late. In the last few years, you have also gained the ability to send these online maps to your cell phone so you don't even have to waste printer ink or paper.
MapQuest driving directions were at the forefront of the mapping community since the dawn of online maps. They were the first site to offer multiple stops without creating a new search and the ability to email a road map link. They too offer business locations and traffic reports. If you notice a problem with some of the directions, there is a Data Error Report form you can fill out to improve the site's accuracy.
Comparatively, one of the best things about MapQuest is the simplicity and functionality. Although the downside to this site is that you cannot do all the fancy drag-and-drop maneuvers (if you consider that a downside at all), there are no satellite maps, you may have a hard time planning alternate detour routes and the language used for explaining slight turns or freeway ramps can be a little confusing.
Ask City is another noteworthy site for driving directions, although it is often overshadowed by Live Earth, Google and Yahoo. The "places of interest" are easily pinpointed on the site, which include everything from local movie theaters and museums to local events and businesses. You will be able to view multi-point directions all on the same page just like the other sites. However, the social networking capacity has not been fully developed on Ask City and navigating your way to posting a review can be more trouble than it is worth.
There is also no way of stopping mid-search without closing the window, which can be annoying. You may also think the maps are not as pretty on Ask City, compared to a Google map. Perhaps the best way to find your optimal site is simply to test drive all of the sites, spending a little time surfing around each one and see which feels most comfortable.

MapQuest Your Destiny

Have you ever gotten into your car, started driving, thought you knew where you were going but then realized that you've actually been wandering around aimlessly? You were almost certain you knew how to get to the little shop but now you're concluding that you should've MapQuested your destination before you left the house!
We do not want to repeat this scenario when it comes to reaching our goals and manifesting our destiny. Its not enough to say "I want to go here." We must also identify some of the roads that we will be taking in order to reach our destination.
Here are a few suggestions:
  • Identify the Big Picture. Where are you trying to go? Based on everything that you have to offer, how do you ultimately see yourself best utilizing these skills to be on top of your world?
  • See it very clearly. Envision the entire scene. What is surrounding you when you get to your destination? Who is there? How do you feel?
  • Evaluate the present. Where are you now? What is the very first step that you could take which would start you in the direction of your goal? How much information do you already have about it and how much will you need to research? Speak to and read about people who have already accomplished what you desire? What were there methods and can some of those ways work for you?
  • Check your confidence. Ensure that you are in the right frame of mind before executing any actions. Do you believe you have what it takes to reach your goal? Are you able to communicate your ideas effectively and inspire others to help you realize your dream? Are you confident and excited about your destination so that others are too?
  • Follow Through. Beware the procrastination bug - its bites are poisonous. Don't allow any subconscious doubt trick you into thinking there's a better time to take action than now. Now IS the time so plan and follow through.
  • Document your plan. You don't have to create flow charts and Power Points - a journal will do just fine. Describe to yourself what you want to accomplish and why. Write down people, places and things that you feel will help you on your journey. Jot down long and short term goals. Make a checklist of things that are possible to do now and things that you will pursue in other levels.
  • Stop thinking so much and let the creativity flow! Begin allowing abstract ideas to flow from your mind, through your pen and you will be surprised at how many suggestions Spirit has! Remember, you are co-piloting this mission with the Universe, so don't stay in the way when spectacular ideas will be channeled through you if you remain clear and open enough to be a vessel.
Don't wander aimlessly, with a good idea of where you want to go but no idea of how to get there. Trust your intuition and your intellect. Brainstorm and use your imagine. Identify some of the paths that lead to your destiny. Its just so much better to have a map while you're on the quest of reaching your destination!

The Impacts and Effects of Specified Laws and Regulations on a Given Firm

Every country has its own regulations, laws and regulatory bodies or agencies governing the manufacturing, sales, marketing and distribution of products within the country. Laws and regulations are purposely made for human beings and other institutions as a guide to bring order and sanity into the society. Because of this, it is likely that their application will impact upon the plans of firms; their effects on a given firm are also inevitable.
An attempt would be made to discuss specified regulations and laws with particular reference to aviation and airline, environmental regulations, stock market regulations, banking regulations, research (and development) co-operation regulations, stock options regulations, labour regulations, intellectual property and social security regulations industry by industry and effects on the plans of firms where necessary.
For example, the Airport High Density Rule (HDR) in the aviation industry was considered as controversial. This rule requires that no more than 155 flights take off and land at O'Hare Airport and at three other major airports in the country between 6.45am and 9.15p.m.That restriction was expected to keep number of airline operations at O'Hare during that timeframe and also to keep the amount of noise generated by aircraft. When this failed, a law was proposed to abolish the rule.
On the tobacco industry, for example, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), an agency of the US government published a rule on tobacco in the federal register to regulate the sale and distribution of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco to children and adolescents based on the health consequences of tobacco use. The rule specifies that anyone younger than 18years of age should not be sold cigarette and smokeless tobacco. The rule further requires manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to comply with certain conditions regarding the sale, distribution and promotion of tobacco products. Thus, vending machines and self-service displays were banned; billboards within 1,000feet of schools and playgrounds were also prohibited. This might have adversely affected firms who engage in such businesses.
In financial terms, however, the rule is expected to produce significant health-related benefits, ranging between $28 billion to $43 billion each year based on the premise that many adolescents would not start smoking because of the rule; with the FDA estimating that the rule will impose one-time costs of around $187 million.
With firms of all sizes, access to capital is of great importance especially when it comes to start-ups.Laws and regulations may affect the amount of investment available either from fnreign or local investors or financial institutions. The most important regulations on capital are usually set by governments. These rules or regulations mainly affect the development of venture capital even though they are meant to guard against defaults. In the UK for example, the introduction of the business angel networks by the government to co-ordinate the flow of SME investment capital is proving successful-a positive effect. Also due to lack of access to pension fund capital in the European Union there is a limited institutional investment. In the case of the United States, most capital venture firms prefer to make investments larger than $3 million, while most entrepreneurs are unable to obtain more than $250 000 from own source and close relations.
The impact of regulations on plans of firms especially those who are technology-based limits the venture capital funding for these firms and affect what they can or intend to do and eventually limiting their capabilities to employ new hands thereby affecting the socio-economic fibre of the society. For example, some government regulations even specifies the type of investors eligible to fund venture capital because of the high risks for certain classes of investors.
In some countries, most firms' source of financing is through the stock markets. In the UK for example apart from the London Stock Exchange, there is Alternative Investment market( AIM); purposely established to assist SMEs. Quite often, the rules on the registration, listing and IPO in terms of size, age ,profit and management set up are too costly and unnecessarily complicated for small and start-ups. This is known to hamper access to finance for most firms and invariably making it impossible for certain firms to pursue their plans and invariably their growth needs. Ghana Sugar Estate is an epitome of firms which are denied needed funding as a result of controversial restrictions on listing to the Ghana Stock Exchange. The effects of this is seen in the overgrown plantations of the newly formed sugarcane company in the Eastern Region of Ghana, loss of about £2,000 a day in revenue to the company and loss of jobs, and raw materials for most industries which depend on processed sugarcane for their work. The impact on the firms planning process is that funds will not be available to pay and maintain most of its qualified personnel.
With technology-based firms like which need constant innovations, source of financing is key to their planning and so any regulations or laws meant to provide adequate source(s) of finance is welcomed.
The NYSE has come under intense scrutiny to reform as there had been spates of irregularities in the exchange in terms of trading practices. Up till 2001, stocks traded in fractions of eighths and sixteenths i.e. 12.5 cents and 6.25cents respectively enabling a specialist buying a stock to sell to make at least 12.5cents.That has narrowed to a mere penny. This is as a result of decimalisation; a rule set up to change trading from fractions to decimals.Decimalisation reduces spread. The largest specialist firm LaBranche & Co., has been affected with a reduction of its market capitalization being halved to $474million in the past year. The effect of this regulation on LaBranche's plans could be felt in its budget as funds might not be available. It will also have effect on its investors.
Notwithstanding this, the impact of this decimalization rule is felt on NYSE which in the long term can tear the Exchange apart thereby affecting the very people the rule seeks to eliminate that is the brokers and specialists on the floor. The effect on NYSE's plan is to start perform its 1.4b shares daily electronically. It is believed that if NYSE does not match its rivals like NASDAQ on automatic trading, investors can take their trades elsewhere and that means a lost of huge annual fees in revenue to NYSE and possibly lost of jobs.
Until recently when it was announced on the TV a proposed credit regulation to improve transparency, the credit or loans market has been shrouded with secrecy that most firms were paying too much interest which affects their operations. Even though to the large firms the unavailability of the transparent credit regulation seem to benefit them i.e. their profit, on the whole it costs the SMEs to the extent that the US government has introduced new types of regulations that requires banks to report their lending to SMEs which are ranked and publicised by the government as a guide for potential lenders. In addition, in the United States, reforms to reduce paperwork, speed up loan approval and reduce costs have led a number of commercial banks to create new departments specialising in the origination and sale of small business advice and other guaranteed loans. At the moment some 60% of SMEs now rely on some form of bank credit.
In Ghana, the government has put in place certain regulations which are believed to be in favour of small firms like First Allied Loans and Savings Bank. This company posted a profit before tax of about $2m, a lot of money for a new bank. The impact on the plans of this firm is the recruitment of the best human resources in the industry culminating in a position to compete favourably with old and big banks in the Ghanaian banking industry.
However ,after deregulation in Britain, competition between banks and stock markets and among banks rose with loan increases to SMEs.Nationwide Building Society was one of such banks to benefit from deregulation. It can now compete favourably with other high street banks. Nationwide is creating more employment as a result of the deregulation law. The impact on the firm is that profit has increased and its members are satisfied and thus growth is imminent.
In a world nowadays with improved, challenging and competitive immense technology innovation and know-how, new businesses spring up in this sector as a result of its dynamism. It is also another sector that has a strong interest in research and development in co-operation. These technology-based firms or enterprises, however, are incapable to engage themselves for in-house research activities. To this end, therefore, there are as well numerous regulations most popularly the antitrust law. Known also as the Sherman Act, this is meant to prevent monopoly. Microsoft was accused of using its position in the software market to maintain its monopoly in operating systems. It was also accused also accused of using its operating system monopoly power to dominate the browser market and that Microsoft bundled its browser into its operating system to try to force Netscape out of the browser market. By antitrust standards, a judge gave an extraordinary ruling describing Microsoft's dominance of the PC operating system market as "applications barrier to entry" and by that Microsoft held its prices substantially above the competitive level. The effects of this law on the plans of Microsoft is that consumers will now have more choice and so Microsoft will have to come out with more innovations to attract more customers and maintain its position in the industry now that there seem to become a competitive market place where all kinds of innovation can thrive. Regulators now appear more powerful and Microsoft will have to reconsider other related laws when planning. The impact on Microsoft's plans in the long run will in my opinion be positive bringing about more improvements in the PC operating market.
Another area with regulations of concern is intellectual property laws or intellectual property rights (IPR).The reader's digest word power dictionary defines intellectual property law or rights (IPR) as ''an intangible property that is the result of creativity, e.g. patents or copyrights." Just as research findings are commercially traded by the owners or universities, patents and copyrights are also traded. Although, the filing of patents is generally known to be inefficient, slow and costly with the system usually in favour of larger firms, its absence could have brought about chaos in industry. For example a French court ruled against internet search powerhouse Google Inc.in an IPR case for linking a trade marked search terms and ordered Google to stop. The impact on Google is yet to become significant but it is obvious that it immediately sent a message to them to review their plans on their IPO which will in effect affect their business plans leading indirectly to a fall in profit as a result of the effect of the restriction on the search services they provide.
It is widely accepted amongst academics and executives in the business world that, the main assets of most firms is their personnel in other word their human resources. There are a number of employee-related regulations and laws in terms of labour, on recruitment and hiring of workers; social security with regard to retirements, pensions and health benefits; and the newly introduced stock options to compensate employee.
The costs and benefits of such regulations are enormous considering the fact that employee-related issues are somewhat at the fabric of the organisation. In many countries the regulations ranging from fee-charging recruitment services, working hours to social benefits limit the freedom of business executives and entrepreneurs to operate usually in terms of hiring and retaining qualified workers. Some regulations on labour also restrict the recruitment and dismissal of personnel, payment of overtime and use of part-time and temporary workers. Coyne (1998) writes that The European Union Directive on the Organization of Working Time which establishes a maximum 48-hour working week including overtime is considered by smaller firms to be interpreted in an inflexible way thereby restricting their ability to make best use of their labour resources. These really affect the firms because they are unable to recruit the best of personnel they might be looking for which could indirectly affect its operation(plans) as most banks choose to deal with firms with most well- qualified personnel. However, to those on the other end of the spectrum, the limitation on the maximum hour regulation is of great benefit and has had positive impact on the plans of the firm. London United Busways Ltd. for instance has recently recorded its lowest accident rates as a result of the ceiling of EU maximum driving hours a day (and week as well) thereby preventing tired but money-seeking drivers from driving. The company can now rely on the services of recruiting agencies to cover for the extra hours. The long-term benefit to LUB is that it can employ few workers, give them overtime to cover the needed hours and save some costs on pensions and sick pay to workers. The impact on the plans of LUB is that customers' confidence in the company will increase and enhances its corporate social responsibility stance.
